They tend to crack easily also when ripe

There are two kinds of green when ripes now and there have been in the past as well, but those varieties were not made commercially available. Most develop an amber blush when ripe and they have a yellow epidermis, but there's also Green Doctors, a cherry tomato, and some other GWripes that have a clear epidermis so they don't form an amber blush.

green Doctors with a clear epidemis also exists and is called Green Doctors Frosted since the fruits look like frosted grapes.

One site that shows pictures that illustrate the difference is Glecklers.

At theHome site at Glecklers click on the cherry tomatoes to see both versions of Green Doctors and you can also look at the green when ripe section if you wish.

I'm having trouble getting to the list of tomato seeds right now, but you can try it later. Jeff was one of the first to find the variety that was named Green Doctors Frosted, Neil Lockhart did so at the same time and between the three of us we named it Green Doctors Frosted.

Last summer Adam Gleckler also found quite a few of his GD plants had a clear epidermis.

Also, can't you tell if they are ripe by seeing if they squish a little when you apply pressure on them? Wow that was a weird way to word that... Not sure how else to say that, though.

This year I'm growing Green Zebra, Grub's Mystery Green,and Lime Green Salad. Do they have yellow eperdermises?

GMG and LGS each have a yellow epidermis. I believe GZ does, too, but it's been so long since I grew it I can't say for sure.

With Green Doctors Frosted, ripe fruit has a slightly different 'touch'. You don''t have to squeeze them like Charmin. It's sort of difficult to describe, but fairly easy to detect.

IMO a ripe green doctors is darker compared to the unripe and you can tell the difference if you squish the fruits gently...

The yellow skinned green when ripe tomatoes are easy to tell when ripe because of the amber blush. But for my favorite green when ripe, Green Giant, it's hard if not impossible to determine ripeness visually. I've lost many Green Giant tomatoes because they went from visably under ripe to grossly over ripe in a matter of 24 hours

Best thing I've found for clear skinned green when ripe is when they get large enough and old enough to become ripe, cradle them in your palm daily and very gently squeeze them. If they feel the least bit near ripe, pluck them off the vine and let them finish indoors. They are so sweet and juicy that the ones I left on the vine ended up split or bug-holed
