Cages can help with both. They can be up to 5 ft tall under the right conditions.

My dolce plants are starting to produce but the fruit on one is fatter and more blunt than pointy like the rest of the plants. is this normal?

Peppers seem to have more outcrossing. We often see variants in our rows.
It is one reason we don't do any pepper crosses. We just collect the ones that occur naturally. The first two plants are Dolce di Minervino. The last one is probably a hybrid from an inadvertent cross. |

Fred, Thanks for answering. It could always be an error on my end, I do try to be very careful though. The dolce di minervo are starting to produce great, I'm going to wait for the first to turn and then fry up ripe and green. Yummers. Don't know what the oddball will look like (color wise) or taste like, will post photos when it has some color and let you know what I think of taste. If it's anything you'd like I'll send the seeds of it back to you.

My suggestion is to pick off the green fruit from the Dolce for a couple weeks (to let the plant get larger) and then wait until they are deep red. It is when Dolce is ripe red that it stands above other southern Italian frying peppers.

Thanks for sharing the Mareko Fana seed. I just tried my first one, and it is awesome. It has a little more heat than I expected, but that is okay with me. I will definitely be growing this pepper in my garden every year.
I cut one open to save seeds, and the aroma is incredible. Every time I walk by the seeds, I have to stop and smell them. I'm still waiting on my first Dolce di Minervino. |

Fred has a link to a photo and description in the first post of this thread. The photo of the Dolce isn't very clear. Both peppers look somewhat similar. The Dolce is red and a sweet pepper, and the Mareka is brown and is a mild/hot pepper.

I don't have any ripe ones today, but I'll try to post shortly.
For me, they're quite different. Dolce is like Jimmy Nardello on steroids - similar in many respects, but much larger. Mareko is much smaller - about 4" x 3/4" with beautiful leathery skin and a wonderful spicy, not-to-hot, taste. Both very nice. If this sounds wrong, somebody let me know! |

I would agree. And, in my brief experience, given a choice raccoons will take Dolce over Jimmy any night of the week.
BTW, thanks Fred. Both peppers have done well for me this year. We've been picking Dolces for about a month and Mareko Fana is just starting to ripen. |

I could put this in the Wanted section, but here might be more efficient: does anyone have a few seeds of Mareko Fana to spare? I have many tomato varieties but not too much in the way of pepper seed to offer (Trinidad Perfume, Aji Colorado are a couple I have). Please PM me if you do and I will send a SASE.
Both peppers sound very interesting. I particularly like the mention of Mareko Fana being used in powdered form. I like to dehydrate peppers and make pepper powders and flakes.....
