Sad Seedling Story, get your tissues
Went to check my 2 flats of sown seeds today. Needed water. Watered the 2 full trays, 100 seeds. Nothing had sprouted yet, so I thought I'd move the trays to my ironing board just for the natural light closer to the window. Unplugged the heating mat. Moved the first tray.
When I turned my back to walk to the ironing board, the weight of the therostate slid off the table and flipped over the entire 2nd flat of egg cartons on to the floor. Grrr Felt like crying. I picked up all the DE and tossed it back into the egg cups. But I will be dumping it all out because I won't know what the plants are. 50 of my little would be babies. Gone. The other sad part is that I put all 10 of my Sakharnyi Zheltyi 'sugary yellow' in Russian seed in that first flat. And the 10 seeds of Sungold. Those will be easy enough to replace, but not the Russian seeds. Guess I strt over tomorrow morning after I get the egg cartons all washed up and ready to go. |

If only you had a video of that happening, you could make a lot of seed money and some selling it to that blooper show on tv.. sorry for your dilemma.. At least it was sudden death and you didn't have to watch them droop and wilt away going into the growing season as I have last few seasons..lol..yeah I know the feeling.. won't be the last time ..WE all sometimes have to resort to buying plants as I have many times in the past. gl, john

Zeroma,
I feel your pain!! I had a big oops today myself - I was watering my flats in my germination room and turned too fast, upsetting a tray of pepper seedlings I had just potted up yesterday into 16oz red cups. They all overturned and fell onto the floor in a big pile, and all my name tags fell out of the cups. The peppers weren't really damaged and I was able to repot them, but now I don't know which name tag goes with which cup, and there are six varieties. And these were the ones that I was giving to some friends who only want to grow certain kinds!! So I guess I will grow them myself and see which is which when the fruit appears. Sigh... Lyn |

That is a shame!
If you have an extra flat grow them out anyway as potluck giveaways. |

I've been battling raccoons, just after I took my trap down (3 weeks of no activity) the next day they rip up the beds and I lost 3 heads of romaine and some precious spinach. This was Wednesday so now i'm off to start some more lettuce to account for it. I guess its the not so fun part of the passion we all share. I'm sure you will have seeds up again in no time! |

Oh, so sorry! It might be interesting to grow some of those out and hope for the Sakharnyi Zheltyi to be apparent?

Oh! I'm so sorry! I just looked up Sakharnyi Zheltyi and it looks really interesting! Maybe somebody has some seeds to send you? If it's not too late to start more, that is.

I had that unfortunate experience 2 years ago with an entire tray too...really so sad I did get seeds for SZ, but have planted all of them. Will save seeds, but that doesn't help you now.

Bummer. Sorry to hear about having to restart. My daughter has dropped a few of my seed trays with pepper & tomato plants while trying to water them when i am not around watching her sneaking in to our grow room. I've found plants laying on the floor because i think she was just trying to transplant them. Can't be upset about it because she loves planting seeds and taking care of daddies plants. Don't feel bad just start again. We feel your pain.

So sorry.
I usually wait until the plants are larger and the trays heavier before dumping them. Like last week. Trays were set out in the sun. I opened the recycle bin, the lid hit the top of an appliance dolly, the dolly went rolling across the driveway, hit the bucket supporting a tray of potted up tomatoes, upending the tray and completely jumbling the plants, soil and labels. I 've narrowed the possibilities to about 10 combinations of labels and plants. Rick |
