Tomato and other garden pictures 2014

So the tomatoes are (almost) all planted. Below in the main garden I've got Sungold, Golden Monarch, Wisconsin 55, Celebrity, Purple Bumble Bee, and Black Krim. In the 1/2 whiskey barrel is another Sungold with lettuce. In the 5 gallon buckets are the dwarf project tomatoes. Still to be planted is an experiment tomato and I've got an extra 5 gallon bucket I'm going to throw some Frosted Green Doctor seeds in there and see if I can beat fall frost on those (added those seeds with some watermelon and pumpkin seed order recently).

The only thing you need to add to the barrel is salad dressing.....well and some ripe tomatoes. Nice setup you've got with the lettuce.

The menard buckets, are those just filled with potting mix? Curious because I see an overfill drain hole a little above the bottom.

Yeah they are filled with Pro Mix and about 5 trowels full of composted manure. I'll feed the bucket planted tomatoes about once per week. The holes are 1/2" diameter, 1.5" above the bucket bottom, 2 per bucket. I got that suggestion from someone here on TV. It leaves a nice little reservoir of water for the hot days of July and August.

What varieties are you trying from the dwarf project? This is my first year with dwarf tomatoes. I am growing Sweet Sue and Rosella Purple from the dwarf project along with New Big Dwarf and Lime Green Salad.

Thanks! The cinder block holes are unsightly now, but they'll have marigolds planted in them in the coming days.

For the dwarfs, I'm growing two each of Vince's Haze and Lucky Swirl.

The Fort Knox fences are for rabbits, they otherwise eat all my spring veggies and pepper plants.

Another larger zoom out of the main garden (also have a 12x2 bed by the gardening adding a ~4x8' 'test' garden on the west side of the deck and do some container growing. Got the peppers in this evening. Still need to sow cucumbers and plant squash that are just sprouting in peat pots. Marigolds and herbs will grow in the cinder block holes. This picture is taken looking south (cattle panels on north ends of beds).

I'm digging these dwarf plants. They just look super strong and healthy and are just starting to flower.

Great looking setup. I've been thinking about adding a raised bed to our yard and like the idea of the concrete blocks with marigolds growing in the holes.

Things are growing well. A few pictures of the main garden tomatoes, peppers, and a close up of a Vince's Haze dwarf. The Sungolds have set fruit, others will be there very soon.

Thanks! I recommend the blocks, I also grow herbs in the holes and they do well in there. The blocks have gone through 3 winters at our house and are as good as the day I put them in. I suspect they'll last a very long time.
