Are the yellow sticky traps specifically baited with white fly attractant? I've used the kind that attract cuke beetles, but as soon as they are filled up, they are useless.

The bait is the yellow color. They are strongly attracted to it. No whitefly or leafminer issues for the entire 10 month season. Never had them fill up yet.

I just discovered I have whiteflies in my high tunnel.

I'm looking at ordering this product, linked to earlier on this thread:
http://www.evergreengrowers.com/met5...w-formula.html

A half-pint is a staggering $50, but it will make up to 100 gallons of spray. That should get me through the summer at least.

I have some Malathion that has been sitting around for years, and I'm tempted to use it. But market customers really like my "pesticide-free" label. Hopefully, the $50 bottle of spray will pay for itself.

edit: I just ordered it. $58 with shipping.

Since you are in a relatively closed environment, I would look into Ladybugs as a non-toxic, "first choice" option.

Regarding your second question, would you feed your own children produce that had been sprayed with Malathion???

I lived in Florida when there was a citrus fly outbreak, and they literally sprayed the entire state with it.

My bio-insecticide is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Here is more information about it: http://www.met52ec.com/labels/ec

I just went into the high tunnel and sprayed every plant with the garden hose to knock off all the flies I could see. It was easy to see them against the black plastic as they dropped off. There were a lot more than I realized.

One thing to keep in mind is WEEDS harbor pests. Try to keep any and all weeds out of your greenhouse.

I bought one little yellow fly trap, but the problem is much larger than that. I would need to buy some yellow poster board and make my own huge traps, which is not a bad idea now that I think of it.

I sprayed them all off yesterday, and now I can't tell that I did anything. It's like they all just crawled back overnight.

I talked to a rep of the company I ordered the bioinsecticide from. Important to note about the Met52 product is that it will kill all bugs, including beneficials if hit directly. It is only appropriate in infestation problems such as mine. When I hopefully get the whiteflies under control with the Met52, then I will stop spraying it, and within a few days it is fine to start releasing beneficials.

The parasitic wasp is the commonly purchased predator, but the guy I talked to recommended Delthastus, a predatory beetle: http://www.buglogical.com/delphastus/ That web site selling them recommends they be used together with the wasps.

Cole- buy a big tub of Tanglefoot and some yellow plastic cups. You paint tanglefoot on the cups and stick a bamboo skewer in each to put in the ground, or drill a hole to hang them up with wire.

Or use a pushpin to fasten them onto a wooden stake. That makes a drainhole too, if your sprink system gets water in the cups.

Vaseline smeared on the cups works too.

I've done that too. Gotten a couple packages of the colored 3 x 5" index cards, taped a bamboo stake to the back of it and covered with vaseline and put in pots. Works great.

The Met52 seems to be working very well so far. It's been five days since the first application, and I just now sprayed it the third time. It looks like I still have a lot of whiteflies, but almost all of them are dead. I sprayed some potato beetles munching on a volunteer plant a couple days ago. They are dead, too. The stuff is apparently quite lethal to bugs.
