A very cool learning from the Dwarf project is that you never know what the hybrid will taste like. Some great crosses led to really mediocre F1s, but some outstanding things then popped up in the F2 and beyond.
The best tasting F1s - in fact, great tomatoes - are Sneezy (Golden Dwarf Champion X Green Giant) - medium large smooth delicious bright yellow. Pesty is really good - large oblate sweet pink (New Big Dwarf X Pesta Mortgage Lifter, a typical large bicolor), Sleazy A (huge oblate sweet pink, New Big Dwarf X Carbon), and Tipsy (medium deeply flavored red, Golden Dwarf Champion X Elbe - so an odd red F1 with a yellow X orange cross). The worst tasting F1 to me was Happy (New Big Dwarf X Paul Robeson), though lots of good eventually emerged. Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Eventful, Grumpy, Dizzy, Jaunty, Nosey, Sleepy and Witty are all bland-ish - most are non descript medium reds. So you never know!

Well, but aren't all hybrids children of the heirlooms ?
Just thinking. Gardeneer |

The PanAm website has some other interesting varieties as well, Orange Zinger is one that would be something to try out.

I can't really believe those numbers - they would mean a tomato variety that survives the Finnish winter...

"I can't really believe those numbers - they would mean a tomato variety that survives the Finnish winter..."
----------------------------------- I agree, there's a mistake. I think they must mean their tomato (like all tomatoes) is hardy down to zero degrees C, 32 degrees F, the freezing point of water - at which point it will freeze and die. No surprise there. |

I ordered the Orange Zinger this year and have it growing in flats right now. It is a nice looking sturdy tomato this far. Hopefully I will get it in soon and have something to taste in the near future.

Then again, such a resistant tomato would be a hit in colder climates..
But again, mere survival might not equal 'great taste' - sun and warmth are still needed for a good tomato flavor. Tomato isn't like lingonberry or cranberry that only get sweeter and tastier when frost hits them... |

Don't forget about Rosy (Rosella Purple F4 (RL) X Orange Heirloom (RL))
This was the best of the F1s I trialed in size, flavor, and production. The flavor of this one was just a bit below or on par with the best releases to date.... Lee Quote:

Although be careful with the F1 post... it could cause drooling damage to your computer!

Lee, you're right! Love the pics and especially Patrina's when she was getting all those colors!
Might be on my list next year! Greg |
