The search for miracle sweet tomato plants

2015 is winding down and I still have not found a tomato as sweet as the miracle sweet hybrid. The nurseries tell me they cannot get the seeds because no one grows them anymore. Is there anything out there as sweet?

Miracle Sweet was a short lived variety, only on the market for less than 10 years.

But I have been growing out and saving seeds ever since. I believe I'm at F5 or higher, not sure right now as my seeds are upstairs. While what I have may not be quite the same as the original, it's all that's out there any more. At the moment my seed site is down due to health issues plus I don't know if the seeds I have currently are good or old. I need to do some checking and new germination tests.

I don't have capacity to grow from seed. I buy plants . Miracle sweet was so good and so popular. I wonder why it was cancelled.

I don't know that company either.

But before ordering ANY variety that has been out of production for more than just a couple of years, I would contact them and ask if they are indeed F1 seeds and therefore OLD, or their own grow-out and therefore probably fresher but not 100% the same as the hybrid.

This company doesn't actually state they are F1, but I have seen other companies selling varieties I know haven't been in production for over 10 years, claim F1. Just be careful.

On my site I tell people ALL the seed I sell is MY OWN SEED and therefore NOT F1 hybrid but as close as I can determine to the original.

I know you stated you don't want to start from seed yourself. But possibly you can talk to your favorite nursery and let them know where to get the seed for varieties you want. Or like 1 of my customers did, buy small packets and give it to the grower in exchange for a few plants.

I went back and checked that companies about us page. Looks like somebody who used to be in the business and had well-known companies, so I would order from them, but that is good advice Wi-Sunflower for other questionable sites.

Yes, I bought several things from Seeds 'n Such this past winter. No problems with the order or products that I could see. I did purchase "Miracle Sweet" from them, but didn't grow it. "My eyes are always bigger than my stomach" when it comes to ordering tomato seeds.

But I will grow it next season.

Be careful about the name "Miracle". There is an OP tomato known as "The Miracle". It is basically a 4-7oz red slicer, but its origins are in the Middle East where it got its name for having a central core area that looked a bit like the Virgin Mary. I received it in a trade back in 2008 as "The Miracle - BPF". Research told me that the "BPF" stood for the person who donated seed to the USDA seed bank back in the 1960's - Bulleri, Paul F. (an Italian business man.). Don't get caught off guard by a name game.

I know that company and it's owned by a man named Hilton,who had a stable of companies for many years.

He sold out to Jung's, kept just one company,not this one,but I knew he couldn't stay out of it for long.

This should help some of you remember, yes I knew his last name but confirmed his first name is Wayne from this link from Tania about the variety named Mr.Stripey

Carolyn, yes I knew him,we had words when he was selling the variety Big Zac as an F1 and it wasn't b;/c he had this note saying to rouge out certain plants, and Minnie herself was asked to come to the original Garden Web and explain what was going on and she said she had sent him both parents,he was having the F1constructed, but it went badly. And in a nasty takeover he bought Vermont Bean,which was a great place.More to the point it was his Totally Tomatoes that most knew, but as I said above he sold out to Jung's,which now have it and had a lot of work to do cleaning it up the offerings.And I was involved in a marginal way helping with that.Sometimes it's good that I'm 77 and more in touch with the past than most.

Edited to add that I was just looking at Gerardo's latest post in the Photo Forum and he got wrong seeds from Seeds N Such.
