I do not think that I would rely on the sum to purify water. Would you drink it?

If it was done right: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_water_disinfection

which, granted, is not the same thing as sitting in a rain barrel.

Yep for desperate people who have no other water supply, thanks but I'll pass.

What are you talking about? The original question was about watering plants from a sump pump to a rain barrel. Nobody is drinking the water or trying to purify water with a pump...

Then why did YOU mention putting it in the sun? You don't need sterile water to water plants just not sewer water.

Keven the statement threw me off for a bit too.
Then I realized they meant sun to purify water not sum and or sump pump.
Here are my thoughts on collecting run off and rain water in tanks and ponds.

We had a big spring fed pond above our place on the side of a hill.
The cows wadded in it the critters drank from it the snakes swam in it and we fished from it.
The rain would also run off the sides of the hill where the cows grazed and filled it up.

From this pond we had a line running about 300 yards or more to the house and garden.
This is what we watered from and we would also drink from it.
I was raised up drinking water from ponds rivers and creeks.
I dont need so called purified city water to drink.
I also understand antibodies.
Mine are different than a city slickers that was raised up in town never doing eating or drinking what I did growing up.
What people in Mexico can drink would put me in the sick bed.

I'm with Cole on this one if it weren't for UV rays from the sun we would be in big trouble here on planet earth.

As far as university research and the FDA and USDA I think they are a bunch of egg heads for the most part that try to over protect people.
It is silly to a fault and has at times caused more harm than good.
They have to do this because many people are flat out ignorant of many things.

I watched a YouTube video of the lady from the university of Alaska make sauerkraut.
It was so stupid how far out she went it was unreal.
My concerns here were storing water in a closed tank or semi closed tank in a warm environment.
Doing this will turn contaminated water into a sewer given time.
It doesn't take a lot of bleach to kill this stuff.
When my brother was in south east Asia in 64 I think they had to drink the water un-purified.
They used chlorine tabs in the water.
We would send koolaid to him to help kill the taste of the water.

One final note.
No I dont think Carolyn and others here are university egg heads.
But you guys surely know what I am talking about.

Well thanks for that.

Yes maybe a University egghead, but also raised on a farm, as many here know, and before my time water came from a very deep well with a windmill at the top and I have pictures of that..

It was a VERY big day when municipal water was made available ,actually from the Mohawk River, but purified, and I do remember very clearly when the pipe was put in down our long driveway.

And yes,we had a septic tank but it was concrete and caved in, so we had a municipal sewer system as well.

Carolyn the university egg head type is like the young just graduated petroleum engineer that couldn't figure out why I wouldn't go 60 feet into a derrick and run pipe at 25 degrees the wind blowing 80 miles an hour and snowing so hard I couldn't see the ground.
Western was set up to acid frac and I was holding up the show.
It was his very first oil rig.
This was outside Hobbs New Mexico in the middle of a cotton field on Easter Sunday.
The day before it was 70 degrees and sunny.
I tell you what, sonny you come up there with me.
