Today I'm going to start saving seeds to send in from Bishop's Crown. The somewhat blurry pictures are from early in the morning. It's just too hot to take clear pics later in the day.

Well, it finally happened - I put the Bishop's Crown seeds in a bowl of water, and after 2 hours - most of them are floating. When they float - there's a good chance they aren't viable. Unless I get better results later in the growing season - I won't be sending any Bishop's Crown seeds in.

Salt, let a couple stay on the plant to the just about over ripe stage. This will increase the chances that you get mature seeds.

Salt, I think for pepper seeds floaters aren't necessary duds. It's best if you try a germination test. I'd sowed many floaters and got almost 100% germination rate.

What I've read is to wait until the pepper IS slightly overripe (smooth skin starting to wrinkle?), then break/cut it open, and let the seed cluster dry whole.

Salt... Peppers and Eggplant seeds are not like tomato seeds. They don't like being soaked in water it will cause them to rot. Think about how you germinate your seed for peppers. Very little water and warmth.
Best way to do a germ test on peppers and eggplant is to place between coffee filters, paper towel or even better yet is the brown paper from grocery store bags as it doesn't hold alot of water. Put the seeds in barely moistened paper in baggy and place in warm spot or just take a few seeds and germinate like you would in soil. Count the number of seeds you plant and what germinates for an avg of germination %. |

It was odd seeing so many of the seeds floating - I knew I didn't want to send them in, so I let them soak so long just to see what would happen. They would probably still be floating if I had not already tossed them out.

Salt, I see all kinds of ways to save pepper seeds but I never have a problem saving them even green if they're full grown. I cut out the seeds and put them in a paper towel rolled up with the name on the outside. I've done 1000's of pepper seeds like this and they will grow. The pepper seeds from a full grown green pepper look healthier too than seeds I pull from a fully ripe pepper.

I'll be putting these into bags this coming weekend to send in to the swap. Most of these are ornamental peppers. I still have plants producing all of these if more seeds are wanted. Is there a need/want to send more than 10 packs of 10 seeds each?
(((Some of these peppers look like candy - and they're very hot, so if you have young children/grandchildren - be careful.))) There is another plate of Sweet Cayenne that needs another week or so of drying. 'Not ornamental' No heat - looks and tastes good. Just in case it is hard to read my handwritten labels - they are: * = Ornamental Masquerade * Sweet Cayenne Filus Blue * Riot * Thai Chili Ornamental * Mambo * Maui Purple * Marbles * Royal Black * |

Sweet! Salt you're quite a prolific grower of tomatoes and peppers! I think "the more the merrier"! Many participants are not actively requesting seeds in the spoiler alert thread but would enjoy growing sweets and ornamentals. And you're spreading the love!
A great example is when GuruofGardens offered Crunch Sweet Orange pepper seeds, I was the only one jumped on it. Turned out it is THE BEST sweet pepper one can grow. (Cole Robbie has reviewed it in his No-Till thread). YUM! |
