Rebel Yell surprise!

Well, whatever it is I hope it tastes good. I've seen this one other time with a Barlow Jap plant. Seeds were given to me and I planted out 2. One plant produced fruit true to form and the other created a darker color just like this and unfortunately it was bland so I'm hoping this isn't a repeat in taste results.

I buy watermelon and cantaloupe at the grocery store because I'm too lazy to grow my own. I usually buy the same varieties each year. The markets receive their melons from many different farms in many different states and some from other countries. Occasionally, I get very good melons in taste and quality. Normally, I get melons which taste okay, but not great. Often, I get melons which taste like cardboard with the texture of plywood. The geographical origin of the melons seems to make a huge difference in taste and appearance within the same cultivar. I would think the same is true for tomatoes and other crops.

Ricky, those do not look like RY, mine are pink, too bad they were destroyed by the hail. I have a bunch of seed, I can send you some for next year if you don't have any left.

Mine looked a lot like the ones in the picture. And the seeds came from here.

Since I got my seeds late I didn't get one out until my second planting and it doesn't produce in the heat as well as I was hoping. None of the fruit were what I would call really large nor did it produce very many but they were good. I set out a second one at the end of may and picked the first fruit off it today so it isn't really early. A Brandywine Cowlick's actually was a week earlier and had more and larger fruit planted not three feet away in the same bed. If I can keep the spider mites under control hopefully it will still be producing in the fall and I believe I set one out the end of July in my next to last planting. I will try setting a couple out in the spring with my large fruited pink beefsteaks which always get the earliest planting date. By next summer I should have a better idea and feel for the plant and give a more knowledgeable assessment of how it does here in the hot humid climate of LA.

Mine produced beautifully until mid July. They are mostly dormant in the 100 degree heat, but still producing a few very small ripe tomatoes in the heat. They are producing secondary growth which will provide some medium sized tomatoes which we will use until about Christmas. Our first frost is usually mid November, so I pick a lot of green tomatoes which ripen slowly in my shop.

I saved a lot of RY seed this year which I plan on offering in the early fall along with Cherry Falls, and a couple of other varieties which performed well for me. I will post in the seed trade forum, but notify of the post on this thread. It will be an SASE offer, but I won't need anything in return.

I got my seed from Salt last fall and grew my tomatoes isolated by about ten feet from other varieties. I used the largest, earliest tomatoes to insure no cross pollination occurred.

This is the fully ripe tomato. Definitely NOT Rebell Yell. Most likely an accidental cross. Unfortunately it has no taste. Ugh.....

Those don't look very different from my RY's with the dispersed seed locules. My RY's didn't have the pronounced white nodules the seed/gel packets attach to. I don't like to eat the large white nodules.
