I saved seeds from a hybrid plant I grew last year.chef's choice.ammana orange is one of the parents apparently.well I grew out four plants this year.upon closer inspection today I find that one of the four plants is producing oxheart type tomatoes.I'm really happy at the find.now,if I keep seeds from the heart shaped plant does anyone know what my chances will be of those plants being heart shaped? Thanks..Will be interesting to see what color these hearts ripen to as the chefs choice are dark yellow.

My Google search tells me lots of places are offering it.

I checked Amana Orange at Tania's to be sure no hearts had been noted,and there were none.

There was an Amana Pink one and WOW,did I get a surprise with this one

Since what you have is an F1,and Amana Orange is said to be one parent,we don't know what the other parent might be,or indeed other parental inputs considering the disease tolerances bred in.

So please do let us know what that heart one turns out to be as to color,we see the shape and how about size.

And no, it wouldn't be related to the pink Amana which apparently I goofed when sending seeds to Jeff.

Well, if you like what you've got continue with F3 same as F2 and try to segregate. This might constitute a dehybridization (going back to one of the parents ) OR coming up a totally new OP.

My BAD ,for I missed that in your first post,so yes those saved seeds are F2 seeds that you planted out so now you are seeing genetic segregation,and that heart one,well,if there were no mutations or cross pollinations of the original F1,it might indicate that a heart was part of the original parentage, but that's a long shot IMO.

That really depends on the parental inputs,which in this case are not known

But I can give you a rough idea using just one example of one I dehybridized where there was an accidental X pollination,one parent was known.Craig L, nctomatoman here at Tville,had sent out seeds of Yellow Brandywine,a person sent him back seeds for what Craig found were red beefsteaks and had great taste,etc.Craig didn't have room to set out enough plants to hopefully find that red one so he sent the seeds to me since I had a whole large field at that time.

As you can see from the above link it took me 5 years to find it and be sure it was stable.

I have no idea what kind of room you have but you might consider setting out anywheres from 2 plants upwards, the more the better,and keep those F2 seeds and use them the next year as well if you don't have much room.

Plant out until you see the heart,save seeds from it,now the F3 seeds,it will still be segregating,and keep doing that until all plants you set out are the hearts you are after.

Still waiting for these darned heart's to blush.nothing yet.they are looking to be 8-12 oz.should know for sure in a week I'd say.

I had volunteer seedlings come up from Chef's Choice Orange I grew last year. They're all hearts as well with pointy ends. I'm definitely savings seeds and I'm excited as well about how these future generations will turn out.





Did your oxhearts turn out to be similar in color?

Still not ripe yet.but I'm sure they will be dark yellow.

It's kinda weird they are yellow.even the original F1's from the greenhouse were yellow,not orange as advertised.

If they're like mine, they'll over ripen to orange.
