It Is Spring When ..?.

The sedum and mums are coming up and the trees have buds. I was going to relocate some leaves and I stuck a shovel in the ground and it went straight in, the frost line is way down. The lake has open water and the ducks are flying around. Only its mid Feb and not the end of March.

Must wait on any planting till May but really amazing to be working outdoors in Nebraska in February.

Over here the ground never freezes more than an inch. And that is just for a day or two.
I checked the soil temperature about a week ago. I was 50F.
So the soil is always ready if the air is.

its spring here when the bird feeders get stolen or vandalized by the bears or raccoons or whatever it is thats a whole lot bigger than birds or red squirrels.

Spring like here today : 100% chance of rain ; high around 65F.
We need a soaking rain badly. Shrubs and trees need water to pump up the sap and start budding / flowering.
My mesclun start in cold frame is coming along. Broccoli yet to germinate.
Direct sown chives and parsley have survived many frosts and hanging there.
No more frost in sight for the next 15 days.

Forecast for March 1st : 64/48 ....Nice . My tomato plants are ready.
Def , it is spring down here.

In my area people think that spring is here when they start seeing robins on the ground hunting for worms.

Actually robins are here all winter but they can't pull worms from the frozen ground so they are eating seeds and berries up in the trees. I think that most people don't notice them when they are in the trees.

I personally feel that spring is here when I start seeing the crocus blooming although we do have a couple of bulbs that bloom earlier. One is called snowdrop and it may bloom when snow is still on the ground.

It looks and feels like we will be getting a little rain today but by the weather map it won't be much. Afterwards a front is obviously moving in as it is predicted to get down into the 30s tonight and tomorrow night. I was just out clipping a few straggler side shoots from the few remaining broccoli and the wind got so bad I had to come in. I also moved my grafted plants that were outside onto the porch before they got ruined by the wind gusts. After Friday night there are not any lows below 50 for as far as the forecast shows so spring may be here a bit early this year. I'm still waiting on my tulip poplars but I can tell the buds are swollen so they may open up after tomorrow night. The earliest I ever set out any tomatoes that didn't get damaged by frost was the last week of February. My usual first plant out for tomatoes is the first or second week of March but I have had to wait as late as the middle of April. Right now even if the tulip poplar opens up none of my grafts are healed up and large enough to go out into the garden and won't be for at least a few weeks.

It's safe only when you're close to your LFD and the 10 day forecast if favorable. Even then we can get a last surprise freeze. But the winner is when you plant early and it works.

I would agree with this in theory. The pecan is usually the last to spread its wings, a couple of weeks after the mighty oaks, elm, and others. I can recall two times where the p-can got "fooled," but nothing recent.

It is also stated that spring fishing starts when the dogwood blooms, but it is usually about 2 weeks after bloom when they start biting, imo.

Then again, I've seen it snow in May a couple of times too.

. not interested in that property. I have my own.
I just take the forecasts as indicator and bench mark, not 100% goof proof.
Of course they revise them now and then.

Two types of leaf, one is called " salad bowl" and one is called "green ice"
I admit to the beginnings of a lettuce seed addiction. just the beginnings mind you and Tatiana's wesite is a good place to start as she sells quite a few interesting and heirloom lettuces. I have some dark red started called "merlot" too. beautiful and I have found that the red lettuces hold up better in summer, slower to bolt than the green in general.
It really is wonderful to be able to grow anything at this time of year for me. I agree that size of container is very versatile and I have grown tomatoes in them a well
