Bulgarian Triumph or Harbinger

Hello,

Already planning next years crop of tomato's...

Looking to grow either Bulgarian Triumph or Harbinger next season. Anyone growing or with knowledge in regards to these varieties, I would really like to hear from you.

Would like to know the growth characteristics, yeild, first hand maturity rate and taste!

Hi Randy,
I can only comment on Bulgarian Triumph. WHile it is rather late it is more than worth the wait! I found it to be one of the sweetest most intensely flavoured tomatoes around. It looks like those Campari tomatoes in the supermarket albeit slightly larger. Growth- can get pretty big. It is a winner.

I too can only speak to Bulgarian Triumph which is the equivalent of a cluster tomato type.

Production is great as is taste and I wouldn't hesitate to grow it almost every year if I had the room these days.

I don't think there's a variety from Bulgaria that I haven't loved and this one is right up there re taste and yield.

I grew Bulgarian Triumph a couple of years ago. It was productive, but my wife and I found them to be tasteless--no fruitiness or tang. No acidity whatsoever. The texture was dry, for lack of a better word. They were okay when used in cooking.

Whoa! Must have been a very bad season b'c I've grown this variety many times and have never had tasteless fruits nor a dry texture. Actually they're quite juicy and on the sweet side for me.

As for the acidicty comment I think you mean they didn't have great depth of flavor, or a more aggressive flavor, b'c almost all tomato varieties tested for actual acidity (pH) have about the same pH.

Maybe I can convince you to try it again and hope that the season chosen turns out to be a better one.

Randy, my seed source was Dennis Sherwood, a fellow SSE member way back in the early 90's.

But Sandhill Preservation also lists it and Glenn has been trying to offer all the varieties in my book and way back in 1999 he asked me for seeds for all the varieties in my book that he didn't have and I'm pretty sure that Bulgarian Triumph was one of them.

I'd offer you some of my seeds but I have no fresh seed and going on a search and destroy mission to find the old ones is just not in the picture right now.

I grew Bulgarian triumph one year. Very disease prone. Not hardy (may have been the seeds). I thought the tomato tasted great.
