Sister Pickles' sunflowers. She always plants two rows below the corn. They've never gotten this tall before! Must be from the Miracle Grow that she uses on the cukes that she planted between the sunflowers.

The front row is Lemon Queen (with cukes) and the not-so-giant Giganteus (without cukes) behind them.

My grandfather and my grandmother had a large farm near Waco, Texas. Your sunflowers remind me of her garden. She always grew them and we grandkids were not allowed to pick them. She also had a large pomegranate bush.

How did you over winter the Ginger or did it not freeze or something?

If there is a hard freeze and they die back, I just cut them down to the ground and they return in the spring and it doesn't take that long to reach their full height again. Sometimes I can go through an entire winter without any freezes whatsoever. They spread from rhizomes very easily. Here's my Ginger area. It's actually under a shed where I store pots and bags of soil, etc. I enclosed a photo of some about ready to bloom.

Is the variegated edible?
I had some growing I started from the grocery store and turmeric too but neglected it.

I really like fresh ginger to cook with.

About 3 weeks ago my Home Depot had hanging baskets of purslane for $5 each. I bought four baskets. They will literally suck the bees out of the sky.

Bees love both the basil and the Mexican petunia. Hummingbirds are also a big fan of the Mexican petunia, also known as ruellia, although it is invasive here and can pop up just about anywhere.
