anyone try gel packs for rootings?

I had a bit of an accident with a Kimberly.

I removed a small tomato and buds and stuck it one of these gel packs. I thought if it worked my kids would like to see the roots growing(me too)

I got them at meijers and they were $3.00 and change.

I don't see any roots forming but everything looks fine

Of course, I know tomato plants seem to grow no matter how you do it. But looking at that cutting makes me want to sneak into his house and trim those big leaves. Plus it looks like it was stuck in the medium with the broken stem and not recut but I know Bully would not do that. :wink:

I have taken grafting classes though I don't know if this is applicable to tomatoes but I still do it this way.

If you have big leaves you are supposed to cut them in half. The bottom stem should be cut at a slant and preferably right below a node.

Down here they can go in a plastic bag for a bit to create a mini-greenhouse with more humidity.

Looking at the picture drives me crazy but the next thing you know he has roots on the thing and then later the biggest tomato plant on the planet without following the rules, laws, statutes, and regulations of cutting propagation.

To be truthful, I guess I didn't think it would work, I figured it would wilt and die in a day or two.

The plant looks good and the roots just started to grow.

I have a Red Robin growing in my office with a pretty good sucker, I think I'll take one of these packs in and see if i can't get it going too.

When the sun does shine here in Detroit, that window gets a lot of it, so I'll cover the gel pack so the sunshine doesn't strike the roots.
