well this year I will be trying something different for my plant labeling too. For sowing and and potting up I use the window blinds. I need many for my individual small newspaper rolls - about an inch in diameter with upto five seed(ling)s in it - ready to take out the propagator as soon as they can, leaving the rest in the propagator without disturbing them. I find it a very practical approach but I really need many labels for it, about 120 because I would mess up things with numbered sheets for sure ;-) The good thing is that the individual labels can be re-used through-out the transplanting (so you need to make them once, ideally 'before' you start to sow).

Two problems with the windows blinds : some still get anonymous by the end of the season (regardless the permanent markers) and sometimes you do have to go on hands and knees to read it (especially when you cram in 42 varieties, an equal amount of peppers in buckets, melons, ...).

This year I will use the soft metalic wrap from a wine bottle with a letter stamp and attach that to the cords I use to guide the tomatoes when they go in situ : at eye-level ! The labels are practically indestructable (wipe'em flat and you can still read the name), and therefor highly re-usable over the seasons - if you don't change all the varieties every year ;-)

They are even more suited for fruit trees and other longterm visitors of the garden. Just wrap the metalic foil a few times around a wire and you can fix them to almost everything. You can find the punches at about 10 dollars or so, so not the biggest investment, you can buy thin soft metals too (lead,...) but the wine wraps do fine.
