First fruit set
For tomato growers there are always certain milestones (first seedling to emerge, first fruit set, first ripe tomato, etc.). I would be interested in hearing about other peoples' experiences with first fruit set this year.
I realize there are people on the West coast and in the SW who are eating their first tomatoes (I just saw a picture of a ripe Kosovo), but here in the midwest we can only dream about that day. For me, Indian Stripe takes the honors for first fruit set this year. 1st - Indian Stripe (currently about the size of a quarter) 2nd - Danko (size of a penny) 3rd - Bear Creek (not quite the size of a dime) 4th - Sarah Black (very tiny tomatoes) I should start to see some Barlow Japs before the end of the weekend. I also have dried blossoms on Cowlicks, Blue Ridge Mountain, Box Car Willie and Couilles de Taureau. I found it interesting that I planted three black tomatoes, and all three were in the top four for earliest fruit set. |
