Newspapers around tomatoes

Hello every one My name is Andrew and I just signed up today.
I let my my neighbor borrow some garden space in my yard for planting tomatoes and one cucumber plant. I am planning on placing newspaper around all of the plants to cut down on the weeding so I guess I am asking if it's all right to do this after the fact, now that all of the plants are now in the ground.
