Default Nematodes and Newspaper

At market a gentleman told me he had in his garden where he planted his tomatoes and peppers nematodes. He said the way he got rid of them was over the years he started using just newspaper in his garden.

He told me that he would go out and just keep planting it and when it broke down some he would add more. He said it took him a few years to get rid of them and said he has had his soil tested and that now there is no sign of them.

I am curious. I wondered if anybody else had heard of, or has used his method to get rid of them? I was trying to figure out what even in the newspaper could possibly destroy the nematodes and drew a blank.
