Default Strange seed growth - what is this?

I've seen this before on occasion, but never so much as this year. Many tomatoes have had large 'wads' of seeds surrounded by green gel. Some of the seeds are quite plump. This is an unappetizing occurance. I'm guessing it is environmental - perhaps drought. Anyone familiar with this?
