a question about fall crops in warm zones

Is this practiced strictly to circumvent pollination/fruit set problems? Hypothetically, shouldn't a healthy indeterminate variety be able to set fruit again when the weather is more agreeable?

I'm in los angeles btw....

I've never done more than an early spring sowing, pulling up plants when they crap-out. I'd love to have a system to increase productivity in my pretty small garden.
