Anyone else getting unusually large or delicious tomatoes this year?
This year doing Brandy Sudduth, BK, IS, CP, KBX, Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Green Giant, "Cherokee" Green (quotes are because I really don't think this is cherokee, at least not the ones that I have grown from two different suppliers), Potato Leaf 'Black Cherry', and an unknown small pink globe.
Black Krim and Indian Stripe have put out tomatoes that seem much larger than in prior years. Largest BK was almost two pounds, with another one not far behind. Lots of big Brandywine Sudduth, KBX, and Green Giant also, but these don't seem any different (in terms of size) than in other years...taste is very good though. As for taste, all have been great, but some of the 'blacks' have been hard to believe (BK and CP mostly...too bad CP plants were small with poor production this year)...solid flesh, super smooth texture, extremely complex flavour (like a prime rib roast in a red wine sauce), very rich flavour with a lot of depth, and a very strong aroma. Colour of these has been blood red with a bit of burgundy. Other blacks have had great texture with more of a subtle, sweet, fruity flavour. Potato leaf 'black cherry' have also been unbelievably good, particulary when they have been peeled (I peel pretty much all my tomatoes, I can do it pretty fast now and it really improves the eating experience). Descendant of Purple Haze, great texture and flavour, but a bit short of that typical CP characteristic flavour, replaced with a bit of sweet fruity plum instead. Will try to post pics some time soon... |
