Default volunteers/cross pollination

I was just reading an article in a national magazine and the author stated
Quote:
volunteers grow on their own schedule and are less likely to cross pollinate with other plants
I understand the idea of volunteers coming up when the moisture and temperature are ideal but I never heard anything about being less likely to cross pollinate.
