Default Pruning lower limbs...

I read recently that it's a good idea to prune the lower limbs of Indeterminate plants, so as to keep them off the ground and prevent splashing.

Is this the case?

If so, at what stage in the plant's development do we remove them, and how many do we remove?

Thank you!
