2010 was the dryest summer that I can remember. So, I did a little experiment.

I had 2 plants of Aunt Ginny's Purple (my favorite tomato variety). One plant was watered every five days, and produced the best tasting tomatoes of the year (out of 100+ varieties). The other was watered every 2 1/2 days, and produced the worst tasting tomatoes of the year.
