Default Creepy Blush Tomato

I screamed when I first saw this a few days ago, thinking it was a worm coming out of a Blush tomato. Then I realized that snake-like appendage was part of the tomato. I've since become very attached to this tomato, and I've named it Medusa. What causes these strange appendages?
