Aunt Ruby's German Green
OMG! I just ate my second ripe ARGG of the year. This is my third year growing it and still, when I have my first one of the year, I just about melt because the flavor is so darned good! There isn't a thing I don't like about it!
I know many of you are familiar with this one but for those who aren't, they are a large green when ripe slicer with just a hint of yellow orange tint on the blossom end when ripe, meaty and juicy with a tangy yet sweet taste. I always expect it to be a bit later than it is for me but the first ripe one was about a 4 days ago so from the time I planted it in ground it was ripe in about 60 days! It is earlier than a over half of my 40+ tomato plants. This one will always have room in my garden. Another couple of varieties that have this effect on my are Paul Robeson and Orlov Yellow. Unfortunately, I didn't get any Orlov Yellow's planted this year because I had a major seedling mishap earlier in the year. Which ones are YOUR drop dead must plant varieties and why? |
