Haskap (Honeyberry). (Lonicera caerulea L)

My seven Haskap bushes are producing flowers. This is an indication of some fruit being produced this year. The bushes were planted in 2012 about the end of June, since some were received late in the season. The final planting was not well documented. http://www.durgan.org/URL/?XIOHT 11 May 2012 Planting Haskap (Honeyberry) bushes.Three of my Haskap (aka Haskap (Honeyberry, Blue Honeysuckle – Lonicera caerulea L.) bushes were planted in the garden. Four more are on order. The three planted were two Borealis, and one Indigo Gem (Pollinator). Information. http://www.durgan.org/URL/?XTGHG New Haskap Names – ‘Indigo’ Series Borealis,Tundra,Indigo Gem,Indigo Treat, are all related. http://www.haskapcentral.com/ University of Saskatchewan Haskaps need another genetically distinct cultivar for pollination. Recommend using Smart Berry Blue for the University of Saskatchewan haskaps, and Borealis as a pollinator for Smart Berry Blue. Keep in mind that the cultivar you use for pollination will also produce fruit. Evaluating the various literature and interpreting the confusing jangle it appears that ideally in a home garden plant at least one Smart Berry Blue and any of the Borealis,Tundra,Indigo Gem,Indigo Treat. My local supplier recommends Indigo Gem as a pollinizer for the Borealis. To add another wrinkle, the Borealis pollinizes the Smart Berry Blue. To be protected on all fronts regarding pollination, Plant a Borealis, Smart Berry Blue, and an Indigo Gem. I will have four Borealis, two Smart Berry Blue, and one Indigo Gem.More from accident and ignorance than anything else. Remember this is a relatively new commercial fruit and some experimenting is being undertaken, probably contributing to a bit of confusion about pollination. |
