Default Termite poison in my garden? Help!!

I have discovered some termites in the basement of my home. They were on the floor, wriggling around and dying. My father-in-law wants to dig trenches all along the outside perimeter of our home and fill them with poison in order to kill any remaining and prevent any new ones. The problem I am having with this is that he wants to dig trenches right through my garden of tomatoes, green beans, onions etc. The garden is about a foot or two away from my home. Will this make my vegetables unsafe to eat? The last thing I would ever want, is for my family and I to be poisoned, get sick or God forbid die from eating poisoned veggies! Please help! Thanks in advance to anyone able to give me some info on this.
