Default grafting pepper on tomato

Has anyone ever grafted a pepper on a tomato?
It's possible:
http://www.chilepepperinstitute.org/...20Tomatoes.pdf
Tomatoes are more resistant against several molds and insects....and they grow bigger and faster.

On the website, they had 40 graftings but more then half of them died.
They say the rootstock (the tomato) rotted.
Is there anything I can put in the soil to prevent rotting?
