Where I live they're called 'carpenters', probably because they love old rotten wood. They can mow down seedlings alright, but even more of a serious pest on squash last season, as soon as a blossom opened it would be full of them, and they ate the whole zucchini too if I didn't pick off the blossoms and pick the zukes timely. The squash were trellised and up off the ground, so don't believe they can't climb. I wouldn't encourage em... for sure. Given the right conditions they can get out of hand.
