Default pruning

Hello All
I have seen many photos of tomato plants that have all the branches cut off except the top and the flowering ones. Do you do this and is it successfully? The pics on the internet shoe a plant with a main stem and many clusters of tomatoes all the way up. I would really like to try it but don't want to ruin my plants either?

Thanks
Mike
