Default net pot or string for double bucket?

Hi:

I'm making a few last-minute double bucket wicking/sip/swc systems using 5 gallon buckets for reasons. I see instructions all over internet where people use a net pot or deli containers with holes. Wouldn't these be too big and over-saturate the mix? Would running a strip of microfiber (1-2" wide) from the bottom half-way into the soil work as well?

I'm planning on using a container mix of 1 part peat, 1 part bark fines, and 1 part perlite. Hopefully, that will work. I did a 5-1-1 mix last year and it did not wick, and I had to water at least twice a day last year, just drained way too fast.

Thank you for your time
