Which cherries for BIG tomato flavor?
I love cherry tomatoes with a big, complex tomato flavor. However, cherry varieties are usually described as being sweet, like that's a good thing. I'm looking for suggestions of cherry tomatoes with BIG tomato flavor in a variety of shapes and colors. This is in contrast to the thread asking for suggestions for sweet cherry tomatoes.
Here are my winners from last year, which I plan to grow again: Galina (love, love, LOVE it! Big tomato taste, very productive even in high temps) Wild Cherry Tommy Toes Black Cherry Isis Candy (Note: Wild Cherry is from Tomato Growers Supply. This one deserves a LOT more attention--pops in your mouth with BIG tomato flavor, plus BIG production even in record-breaking heat. To me it looks like other currant tomatoes from Mexico, such as Matt's Wild Cherry and Mexico Midget--is that true?) Here are the ones I've grown in the past and didn't much care for: Dr. Carolyn Dr. Carolyn Pink Jaune Flammee (will give this one another try but not this year) Juliet--ptooey! Ildi Riesentraube (didn't produce AT ALL) Sugary Sweet Baby Girl (OK, but not as good as Tommy Toes) Sungold Yellow Pear (productive, cute, but bland) And here are the contenders for this year: Brown Berry Camp Joy (aka Chadwick) Sweet Orange Cherry Porter's Dark Cherry Coyote Mirabell Mini-orange Cerise Orange Ceylon Purple Haze (from Selected Plants) I'd love to hear more about my contenders from people who have grown them, or to receive additional suggestions. Thanks! Cynthia (Since my screen name is feralcatfriend, it's worth mentioning that I'm typing with a former feral puss purring on my lap and his dear brother is performing his ablutions on top of my monitor.) |
