Default Purple Haze F1 56 Inches in 54 days - Unbelievable! (pics)

OK folks, Let's forget the freakin Economy for a few minutes and focus on what is REALLY important - growing tomatoes!!

Here is a photo taken on August 30 of two Purple Haze F1 plants (from cuttings Vince sent me) and at that time they measured 14 inches tall:

Today, 56 days later, I took this picture of the same two plants - - 70 inches tall:

I'm not doing anything special like adding Actinovate nor MycoGrow - - just using a fertilizer strip of Tomato-tone. Also to add even more mystery - as the Sun is at a much lower angle these days, the plants get no more than 4 hours of direct sunshine per day.

So if my math is correct, that works out to be slightly more than one inch per day.

Wish I could make other things grow that fast (in the garden).

Ray

So Ray,

Now that you've had time to enjoy some matters from those Purple Haze cuttings. We're all ears as to what you thought in terms of Taste, Production, Disease resistance?

Where did Vince get those unusual tomato plants? Wonder if they will have them in 2009? And have you sent your stimulus package to the OBama team as the country needs your assistance!!

geeboss,

Vince got the original Purple Haze F1 from Laurel's in Torrance. CA. Fusion Power on this site also sells the F1, although I understand seeds are running out.

Here is a current photo of the 2 plants, now well over 6 feet tall:

The Purple Haze are tasting just fine. With weather here in the mid-60s during the day and night-time around 45, I hope to have them on the Christmas dinner table:

"Vince got the original Purple Haze F1 from Laurel's in Torrance. CA."

Actually I got a "seedling" from a fellow tv member in the area, who got the "seed" from Laurel. Laurel doesn't sell the seeds but the tv member got them as a gift or in trade directly from Laurel(as I remember).

Well, here it is on December 20, and the Purple Haze are still cranking out; over 8 ft. tall today:

It went down to 36 degrees a few nights ago, but no significant damage either to the tomatoes or Snow Peas.

I picked two "Christmas presents" today (To Ray: From Ray) and consumed one just now (don't tell Santa):

...guess I'm just a baaad boy!!!

So Ray..... with those December plants looking so healthy are your taking cuttings and over wintering them for 2009? LOL Hope you and everyone else have a very merry Xmas.

George who is just scratching the surface of learning to grow tomatoes.

Now I need to make those rain barrels to feed my containers and pray that Wal Mart will get those cages in stock sometime in Feb or March. Projects to complete and HDL.

geeboss,

I am actually rooting 10 sucker cuttings I took last week off the Purple Haze F1 plant, in grow plugs right now. Hopefully, they won't develop too fast and get leggy before planting time in early March here. I have 3 of them earmarked to send to Vince in January.

I don't think it is critical Ray, but I noticed the flowers on those cuttings. Usually I pinch off any flowers to direct the cutings energy toward root and leaf growth. I am sure they will turn out fine if you leave the flowers, just thought I would mention my prefered method.

Vince,

I agree on the flower removal, and will pinch them off today. Thanks for the tip!
