Orange Minsk

I got Orange Minsk seeds from Carolyn and have had zero germination. First planting had zip, so used bottom heat with the last of the seeds I had and still got zip. That's the only variety I'm at 0 for 0 for the year. Started 150 cells of about 80 varieties and OM is the only multiple planting with nothing showing. What happened? I had great hopes for OM for this year but I guess it's not to be. Anybody else have better results with OM from Dr C this year?

Carolyn, any other feedback from people you have shared seeds from OM with?

The only feedback I've seen is from Suze, posted in another thread and the following were her results:


I sowed seeds of the following in January, and germination was good (at least 70-75%) for all of them:

Giannini
Ludmilla's Red Plum
Moravsky Div
Orange Minsk
Danko

2 out of 4 Orange Minsk after 5 days with some bottom heat.

My Orange Minsk is on heat right now and I should have germination in a day or so...I will let you know...
I did get zero germ on Gold Ball two years ago, when 80 other varieties germinated...So, I sowed the same seed again this year and it is 2 for 4 so far...Sometimes I think there is no explanation...Occasionallly a particular batch of seeds germinates later than it should, so don't give up too early.

I got 1/4 on OM after about a week.

I got 1/4 Giannini but it took 2+ weeks

so far I got:

Gold Ball: 0 out of 22 (gave up as the seeds started to get moldy)
Lincoln Adams: 2 out of 11 (7 seeds show crack damage, I suspect mail damage)
Giannini: 1 out of 11 (at least 5 seeds show crack damage)

And what about Orange Minsk Tania, which this thread is about?

I cut and pasted Suze's data here for her results with Orange Minsk, but included the other varieties as well since they were all listed together.

Also Tania, help me with my memory but I think I remember that I sent you more Gold Ball seeds recently and I don't remember what else, with padding.

I did find feedback on germination for two previous seed offers I've made, both before Tville was online. And in time I'll post some of that data here just to share with you the huge variability that can occur when several persons are germinating the exact same variety from the same seed production, meaning same age, at the same time.

I agree with Jeanne - this happens, with sometimes no logical explanation as to why.

I had a few varieties this year sprouting after 21 days, and one after 37 days (!).

I came back to edit my above post b'c I remembered that along with the Gold Ball seeds I sent exactly 17 old seeds of Zogola and had already packed them up before Jeanne made her offer, which I encouraged you to accept b'c her seeds of Zogola were much fresher than mine.

And I think I wrote some suggestions with the Zogola seeds as to what I'd do if I were trying to wake them up.

I'm trying to remember what day I sent them out and I think it was last Friday or Saturday or possibly Monday, and they still haven't arrived?

Have to love the Canadian mail system. Neil Gillard never did get the seeds he requested from my seed offer so I had to resend them to him and eventually got them.

Carolyn, no worries, they'll arrive. It does take a bit long to get mail from US, with 2 additional days required to get the mail from Vancouver to the village where I live.

The strangest thing is it takes the longest to get mail to and from Washington state, which is just a few hours drive from here. Takes 7-11 days by Canada Post.

I just planted most of my trades yesterday. Since I saw this thread and I do have some of the Orange Minsk seed from Dr C, I moved that flat to a warmer spot. I'll try to let you know how they do in about a week.

Some of the first seeds from trades were planted on 3/18 and are starting to germinate. I waited on my trades til I had my other stuff planted and had the greenhouse going.

I have had 80% germination results for Orange Minsk in 2007 when I grew it for the first time after I've got one huge fruit of it at our local Minsk farmer market.

Dealing with fresh 2008 seeds and waiting for three weeks I think I might have given up as well Bill.

Are we dealing here with CSS ( crushed seed syndrome) or not since Suze got about 75% germination of OM and someone else got 50%.

As I've said before, there are so many variables even if the seeds as received are OK and some of you have spoken to those variables in posts above and there are others as well.

Let's see how others are doing with OM germination.

If this CSS is really at the bottom of this problem that's bad. I'll also ask Linda at TGS and Glenn at Sandhill and Steph at SSE if they're getting any feedback on this issue.

Right now I can't remember what the packing is for any of those places. And for sure I'm not going to initiate any of those contacts b'c I know that so many seed places are wayyyyy behind and working flat out to get out seeds.

Edited to add that I guess I'm now getting concerned with seeds sent to me this year. A few were sent in padded mailers but the majority, including all the new ones from Reinhard were not. He sent his as he does every year in a regular envelope with small zip loks taped to the inside of a folded over piece of paper. Andrey's were in a padded mailer but maybe that was to protect the CD of Russian music b/c he knows how much I love Russian music.And the new ones sent to me by Tville folks when they sent their SASE's were just in regular envelopes as well.

Today seeds are going out from me to Martha who raises my plants for me and bcday who does most of the seed production and per usual, I do send those in a padded mailer and have in the past but that's b'c there are so many seed packs to be sent to each.

And those seeds won't be sown until after April 1, so I'll just have to wait and see what the results are.

I'm also thinking ahead about any further seed offers I might make here at Tville. It's one thing to deal with my SSE listings but quite another if dealing with a seed offer here. Time will hopefully clarify some issues.
