Default Accidentally deleted Tomatoberry thread

I accidentally deleted the tomatoberry thread a few minutes ago.

The first post in it was removed by the original poster and when I went to delete it, it took the whole thread with it... right after I saw the warning that the whole thread would be removed if I deleted the first post.

My apologies. Sometimes the fingers move faster than the brain here.

ARGH I hate it when things like that happen. A forum that I moderate has a "trash can" feature you can turn on. Anything deleted goes in there so you can retrieve it or empty it later. Is there a feature you can enable?

No trash can feature here, just an "are you sure?" confirmation type message that I didn't see until I had already clicked on the button.

This only happens if the first post in a thread is deleted and this was the first time I've had to do that, since the OP had edited it down to no content.

Mischka,
"Sometimes the fingers move faster than the brain here." It happens to me all the time.

I got the update fromTomatoville. KYGreg posted a message to Carolyn and me. It might of been the last post of the thread. Here it is:

"Remy,

I checked my seed packet and there are about 20-25 seeds left in, so assume I got approx 30-35 seeds. I got seven other varieties from them. The Mary Robinson' German Bicolor is what it is supposed to be. The Big Sungold died early on; a couple of the varieties I am not sure yet if they are what they are supposed to be and 3 or 4 of the ones I got, I decided not to grow this year.

Carolyn,

I am growing the following varieties, all of which are ther first time to grow for me, that are possible matches:

Belarusian Heart
Bull's Heart
Butter and Bull Heart
Jewish
Kazakhstan Heart
Linnie's Oxheart
Mr. Slaybaugh's Oxheart
Mrs. Houseworth
Sylvan Guame

Geographically the prime suspects would be Jewish and Sylvan Guame as they are adjacent to it.

It looks a lot like the Bull's Heart

I will try to make closer comparisons the next few days.

Ah, I love a good tomato mystery."

KYGreg,
I'm really betting you didn't get Tomatoberry. I bought hybrid Sungold and Grapette seeds to sell, and I'm hardly making any money at 10 seeds for $1. I feel there's no way Tradewinds could be selling the true hybrid for $1.75 and give you that many seeds.

And I could cut and paste here a response I made elsewhere that showed quite clearly that Tradewinds was selling saved F2 seeds from Tomatoberry. I just decided to do it anyway, see below..

I went to the site and they lsited several hybrids and didn't indicate they were hybrids while they did indicate that Celebrity and SunSugar were, so it wasn't any accidental error on thier part.

FIRST POST to Greg at DG:
Greg, I think I've solved your problem. You said elsewhere you got the seeds from Tradewinds and that kind of surpised me b'c I thought they sold only OP varieties.

So I just went there and no mention is made that Tomatoberry is a hybrid so perhaps they are selling saved F2 seeds.

Celebrity was IDed as a hybrid

Health Kick was listed and not correctly IDed as a hybrid

SunGold was listed and not IDed as the hybrid but there are a couple of OP versions around, but I would have thought they'd say that, but they said no origin is known, which is ridiculous.

SunSugar was ID ed correctly as a hybrid but only after you clicked on their blue link

And I saw quite a few strange, to me, varieties and no mention of origins or anything else.

I don't think I'd have too much faith is this company based on what I saw there tonight. Just my opinion.

And no doubt you didn't get the true F1 Tomatoberry, rather F2 seeds, and there should have been some variability in those F2 plants and I know you said you gave one to a neighbor and it was just like yours.

So I don't know what the heck is going on but they aren't correctly IDing what is and what is not hybrid, for starters.

Carolyn

And here's the second one at idig in answer to Bill Jeffers who had also posted where I initially posted the above at DG where he said that he thought that it could be F2 seeds.

*****

And yes, B, of course I did see your post there but after Greg said he got the seeds from Tradewinds I decided to go there and look myself and was not happy with what I found as to some hybrid varieties not IDed as hybrids as was the case for their Tomatoberry which does suggest that they were selling F2 saved seeds from some hybrids. I don't like that at all. it's also a bit of a stretch for me to think that a heart such as Greg got, based on size alone, showed up with F2 seeds since Tomatoberry is so small, and small fruit size is genetically dominant to larger fruit size. And not all F2 seeds should give identical plants and fruits.

I'm also remembering the issue several years ago when Tradewinds was the source of what they called White Zebra which led to several threads about that one. It finally turned out that it apprently was a variety that Brad Gates had offered for only a short period of time as I recall. Bill Minkey was the person who had gotten it from someone in LA who had gotten it from Tradewinds. Off hand I can't remember what Brad had called it. And I also remember that Tom Wagner got involved in that discussion as well and seeds were exchanged and Bill grew out the other seeds that were sent to him. I'm a bit cloudy on remembering who sent what to whom,, but Tradewinds was the apparent source with what they had named White Zebra which is still listed in the SSE Yearbook.

Remy, thanks for posting my post again; I was going to retype it this morning after fast fingers Mischka deleted it, lol.

Maybe a positive came out of it. I did a search for tomatoberry and found that I had started a thread(which I had forgotten about) about tomatoberry before I purchased the seeds. There was a post on there stating that this had purchased tomatoberry seeds from Tradewinds; so I sent a private message asking how they had turned out; no response yet but hopefully will get an answer.

I was out this morning and checked my planting of Tomatoberry plants. I also got my seeds from TWF.

Out of 20 plants, most had nice strawberry shaped fruit. Unfortunately tho, they are about the size of German Red Strawberry, not cherry sized. Most look like they will be in the 1/2 - 3/4 lb size, if not larger. 2 plants do have smaller fruit on then, but so far those just look like a cherry, not "berry" shaped.

The plants are rather wispy, sparce, not full and agressive at all. They definately look like an "oxheart" plant. I don't know what the Tomatoberry plant should look like but I would expect something like a cherry, big and bushy.

None of my fruit is ripe yet so I can't report on color or flavor. I will probably save some seeds tho so I can see what I get and if there will be any chance for finding the Tomatoberry we were looking for.

Wi-Sunflowers

Your plants sound like what I have; The "Tomatoberry plant is sparse and not healthy looking at all. I have gotten 3 fruits from it; 8oz, 12.5oz, and 17 oz. It looks like it may have a total of 10-12 fruits on it for the year. Some are more heart shaped than others which have a less tapered shape.

Here is pm message that I got from geeboss about his Tomatoberry seed from Tradewinds

Well my first plant produced a pink/red semi oblong fruit and I've recently started in a cup a trial plant to see the shape of the fruit This plant is giving off fruit that is like strawberry shape except the top is not as wide as some pictures of tomatoberry. Maybe the seeds are from the Hybrid Fruit and not the cross that made the Hybrid. May have to get a container and see if more growing space will enlarge the fruit as the cup is only 166 oz.

Fruit from 2nd plant of Tradewinds Tomatoberry

George

I'll collect seeds from these for next year.

Well they ripened up and I took them inside to save their seeds but DW saw them and ate them....said they were yummy!!! Back to sowing some more in cups and hoping for an extended season and correct shape tomatoberry fruit.
