Ripen from the inside out?
Hello all,
This is my first year growing tomatoes and I picked a Brandywine today. This particular tomato has been the same size for at least the last two weeks and green. Thursday evening just before dark i noticed that it had begun to blush. Less than two days later is was fully pink except for one lobe which is still very light pink. I am surprised at how fast this tomato went from barely blushing to full color pink. (less than 2 days) This may be a silly question but does a tomato turn pink or red on the inside before it turns pink or red on the outside? Bubba |

I believe you are correct. Tomatoes ripen from inside to outside.

If you try to eat it too soon there will be some white tissue in the middle of the outside layer of flesh. I was once told to pick what you think is a ripe tomato and then wait a day or two before you eat it. Especially at the beginning of the season it is hard to wait for them to get fully ripe.
