Yes, you should definately cover that soil for winter. Instead of buying something, could you not use shredded leaves, or shredded tree trimmings for a thick muclh? If you want the black plastic that is okay too, just thinking of what could be obtained for free.

You could add some alfalfa meal and feed molasses as well.

Thanks i got some new black compost from our city dump, they make this from only leaves, branches and very small trees only, they make huge hills of this stuff and move it around every year and sell it by truck loads or give it us us, really black. so I put more on the dirt, i have hay for the dirt.
