Bummer Marianna's Peace first one?

I looked at this nice Mariann's peace this morning a 7am, i just found it with this bite taken out, what should i do now? Cut 1/4 off asap? before it is ripe?or how can i save it with out rotting?

Not the ideal answer I bet - grr whatever bit it. On occasion, my stupid dogs bite a tomato, much to my displeasure.

I hope someone knows more than I do, and comes up with a better idea. Bummer.

I don't know the right answer.....but animals have a lot of bacteria in their saliva ........there for I would toss it

Funny, i did tie my dog up at 7am by the garden, maybe the chihuahua did bite it.I was not looking around at her ,checking plants and picking fruit.

I don't know if my dogs really want to eat tomatoes, want anything that resembles food, or think they're balls.

I am not worried if it was a dog.......I am thinking of a possum or a raccoon. They will eat road kill and can be rabid Crows can carry West Nile disease.....

Looks to be ripe enough where you could use it to save the seeds.

nice idea, i am holding on with this one, Iam worried about all others all 9 plants have large fruits at the bottoms.

So i can save seed if it is not ripe yet?

i don't get all the dog comments, it looks like a varmint bite not a dog.

i've had this happen too and from the looks of the tomato toss it cuz it'll probably rot before it ripens. once open to the air rot sets into a wound like this fast. otoh what do you have to lose, see if it'll ripen before the rot spreads thru it but i guess is it won't.

Tomatoes do not have to be fully ripe to save seeds a few floks (not many) are successful at saving seeds at the green breaker stage and since your fruit is blushing the seeds should be viable mayby see if you can wait until tomorrow to cut it open and save the seeds.

I feel for you-- I've grown Marianna's Peace for two years now and it's one of my favorites! This year I did grow it from seeds I saved last year (my first year saving seeds) and they all germinated. I would cut off the chunk that has the bite in it, save any seeds from that then slice and fry the rest of it!

Looks like squirrel damage to me. They have been murdering mine for the last 3 weeks since the really hot dry weather set in. I've lost over 50 toms to them so far and they show no signs of slowing down on their eating. I guess I'll spend another fall and winter killing squirrels. Their population has just exploded around here in the last couple of years and they are doing a lot of damage. Their favorite tomatoes this season seem to be Marianna's Peace, BTD Pink, Rostova, Hege German Pink and German Red Strawberry. They seem to prefer them just before or after first blush.
