Rowdy Red

I'd like to hear comments on this variety from those who have grown it. I have some seeds started of it, and am trying to decide how may Rowdy Red plants I should pot up. I'll grow at least one or two for myself, and maybe a number or extra plants to give away, if the responses are favorable.

Hate to say this because I love TV westerns, but Rowdy Red just did not produce well for me. For two years I tried growing it and the plant remained small and produced only a couple of tomatoes. I am not an expert gardener and would consider that it was something I did wrong, but other plants in the immediate vicinity did better with no different treatment. The few tomatoes I did get tasted good, though. Would like to hear others' experiences with this variety and hope they were better.

I started a plant of Rowdy Red this year myself. I just planted it out last night. Guess I can't help you with how it performs yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how well it does here in SC.

I'll try and remember to post back come mid-summer and let you know.

P.S. I'm a big Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Western fan too!

I've grown it a couple of times, and production was fine. It was supposedly bred by a retired university? tomato breeder and IMO the flavor reflects a similarity with market tomatoes. It has a "red tomato" flavor that although not bland does not hold up to the (more complex?) flavor of really good heirlooms IMO.

On the other hand it is a really nice looking tomato and the neighbors, who think my good tomatoes are ugly and taste funny, would probably really like it.
