First fruits!!
Ate my first ripe tomatoes today. Jaunne Flamme and Black Cherry. Both were excellent. Both can only get better as the summer continues. Black Cherry was perfectly ripe (Ive been watching it for days) adn had a nice flavor. Not overwhelmng though. Very juicy. Jaunne Flamme however was nothing less than shocking in the mouth. Very nice tartness with a nice fresh sweet taste, with a lingering full-bodied tomato flavor. Wow, really good. The plants are loaded with many clusters of 8-10 golf ball sized tomatoes. Really excited! Im growing 18 varieties as listed below:
Bicolors - Hillbilly PL, Virginia Sweets, Gold Medal Cherries - Blondekopfchen, Isis Candy, Black Cherry, Lemon Drop, Dr. Carolyn Beefsteaks - Cherokee Purple, Sudduths Brandywine, Red Brandywine, Great White, Aunt Ginnys Purple, Red Rose Oxheart - Japanese Oxheart, Italian Heirloom also Wapsipinicon Peach and Jaunne Flamme Plants went in the ground on May 21 in my Westchester, NY garden. Plants are overall healthy with many, many fruit set, just dealing with some blight and Septoria at the moment. I have never had to spray plants before, but I have to break down and use Daconil or the like starting today. Only tomatoes to show any color at the moment are Black Cherry and Jaune Flamme. Will keep you posted. Hoping for a nice harvest; Ive never grown so many plants before! Mark |
