Is there a tomato which tastes like it has basil in it?
So, I was talking to my mother, and she said she tasted a tomato which had a basil overtone to it. Which I have never heard of, seemed far fetched to me. I was thinking she may have had a marinated tomato. But, she insisted it was cut fresh. So, does anyone know if, and what tomato variety this would be?

Melissa, time and time again you'll see some folks saying to plant basil near their tomato plants b'c it makes the tomatoes taste better, ala companion planting. I've never seen anyone say they taste like basil, but here's what you have to assume.
You assume that some end products of the basil plants exit the plants, move through the soil, get taken up by a tomato plant and transported into the developing fruit. Without going into the details of why that can't happen, trust me, it can't happen.

Now, there's a really pleasant thought. BASILMATERS!!! Somehow, I think both would suffer from the joining (if that were possible) and not be a good as when each is grown by itself and the flavors are individually maximized. But, for a moment there, the dream was good.
I gotta go and get some basil from the herb garden.

I love basil, almost as much or more than tomatoes. I could never have too much basil! Does anyone know where I can get this basilmater?
Really, I'd love to find a way ro grow more basil. I'm tired of buying little seed packets of basil. Where can I buy basil seeds in bulk? Like, a pound of it? I'm thinking about next summer, when nothing else grows in the heat, having a big basil garden! |

Johnny's Seeds sells several varieties of basil in units up to 25 pounds.
You can get a quarter pound of Italian Large Leaf basil seed for $8.95 plus shipping, that would be around 70,000 seeds. A pound is $26.25. Genovese basil is more expensive, $12.50 for a quarter pound, around 72,000 seeds. If the plants are spaced 2" apart in each direction (which is probably crowding it too much), a quarter pound of seed would be enough for about 2000 square feet. |
