More Info A lecture regarding potatoes by the most prolific tomato and potato breeder in the Northwest. Tom Wagner is the creator of hundreds of new varieties, fierce advocate for "open source genetics" and organic methods, and one of the only people in the world developing reserves of true potato seed. The lecture will surely touch on genetics, nutrition, survival, and bio-regionalism. Many of Mr. Wagner's potatoes will be on display in the gallery, with their history and methods presented as well.

Tim Donovan sent me the following message indicating some of their interests in the lecture. I met Tim at the Helsing ★★★★★★★★ CSA over a year ago and named one of my blue tomatoes for the farm. They had a musical camp-out then that honored plant breeders by name..and I graciously attended the event for a few hours and happened to have some blue tomatoes grown not but a few minutes from that farm.

1) Not enough people realize the need to take food security into our own hands, and not depend on the nanny state or big business to help
2) Not enough people appreciate potatoes!
3) Barely anyone knows a thing about breeding, and we should all give a gosh darnoodley
4) Portland needs to meet you and appreciate the amazing work you do.

You'll be speaking in our art gallery, a nice sized room with tall ceilings and white walls. I would like to make maybe two dozen small shelves to place around the walls of the gallery, upon which we can place your tubers and have them labelled. Now this is a reach, but it would be awesome to make some copies of your journals in relation to the potatoes, or the tomatoes if you'd like. It would be great to have the gallery tell a good comprehensive story about the lines, from creation to edibility.

This will be fantastic!

Tim grew some of my potatoes this past year at the PROJECT GROW facility in Portland. He ordered the potatoes through the New World Seeds & Tubers website...

and if I am not mistaken...Tim will be displaying some of my potatoes which he grew.


I am going out to dig some first year seedling TPS potato lines in a few...can't wait to see what I will find.....and the lecture will be the first place these tubers will be shown.

Also, but not confirmed....the Farm Director hopes to drag an NPR reporter to the lecture. Perhaps the NPR could interview me for a radio broadcast some day.

For the record I will be bringing family TPS seedlings to the lecture of
Louwala Clough,
India 1035 X Awol Dude,
and Gracie's Harry x John Tom Kaighin.
I dug those just today. It will be fun to display the variations within a single potato berry.

I will be asking my audience which of the following names would they like to see attached to the TPS seedlings of Louwala Clough.....Луала-КлаФ, Smoking Fire, or Klititats Mountain. If you Google those names you might just find the grandparent variety.

I have four of the best clones of the F1 (Gracie's Harry X John Tom Kaighin named tentatively Harry Kaighin I, II, III, IV for my uncle and great uncle of the same name. I hope to get enough growers from the audience to try all four of those and determine which is the best after a year or so...the winner being just Harry Kaighin. These will all be outstanding potato varieties in their own right....having late blight resistance, some frost resistance, hairy leaves deriving from S. berthaultii, yellow flesh, and outstanding flavors of the distant ancestors of Tom Boy/Tom Kaighin. The pedigree of 1/8 Lumper will keep a bit of Irish Luck in tow.

All of my listeners will get a tiny tuber of Azul Toro...sprouting and ready to grow in a pot indoors. Don't know about Azul Toro?......just read Carol Deppe's book....The Resilient Gardener or go to this link...

Yes, I have been in her garage/potato room as I supplied her with many potato varieties a number of years ago.
