Default purple calabash

I ate one of these today and it was really really good. It rang the delicous bell and kept it ringing. I think I will make some crosses with it.

I grow it because it's ugly and love the taste.

I grew it twice and hated the taste and will never grow it again. Same comment for Noir des Cosebeauf, and those are the only two varieties that I know of that really do have a good purple color except for Purple Smudge and Orange Fleshed Purple Smudge which is quite a different story .

Darn good thing that taste is both personal and perceptual such that it's OK to not like the taste of certain varieties.

I like Purple Calabash.

Now - I won't say I love it, and I will also note it does not get a regular place in my garden either. But for what it is, I thought it was pretty good. One point it had in its favor (for me) is that it is definitely not bland. LOL! I hate bland tomatoes.

Another tomato that tastes much better (my pest control guy just raved about them when I gave him a bag full to take home), but has a very close resemblance in color / size and also those "cute" highly ruffled shoulders is Turks Muts (Nuts?)

I also vaguely recall both Morgan and me thinking they had darned good flavor for what they were when I grew it again in (?) 08 or 07?

I wrote this rating several years ago - meh. I do recall at the time that I thought this Turks whatever was supposed to be RL, but the person who sent it to me specifically sent it to me with PL as part of the name.

Yes, it tastes a little sweeter.

I ate something I bought at a market this summer that I "think" was a purple calabash and I loved that winey deep flavor myself. Saved seeds to grow out and see if they grow true. Very deep purple small fluted fruits. too bad I only had one

Oh my gosh... Those are the prettiest tomatoes that I have ever seen! You could frame those pictures and make some real money selling them.
