Default If you could only grow hybrids????

Which would you grow?

Thinking about testing a few out to really see how they compare!

Caution...this is only a test...do not try this at home!!!


I'd like to try Early Girl just for the laugh again!

Seriously, Pick three hybrids.

One Cherry, One Beefsteak and one early!

The hybrids that always did best for me are Champion and Sweet 100. The only hybrid beefsteak I've grown was Big Beef. I know others who rave about it, but the two times I grew it I had lots of problems with BER, and the fruit that wasn't affected tasted bland to me so I wouldn't grow it a third time.

A friend of mine grew Early Girl once and he said the tomatoes from it tasted like cardboard!

Cherry; Sungold F1

Beefsteak: Jet Star F1 or Ramapo F1, for darn good reasons

Early: I've never grown an early that was an F1 hybrid, that means less than about 65 days, for me.

I loved Sungold and Brandy Boy. Big Beef was bland to me. I sometimes grow one called New Girl - not the tastiest, but ok and early and keeps going, plus they're smaller and work well in some dishes I make roasting them.

Off the top of my head, I would pick Sungold and Lemon Boy (the latter usually does pretty well for me). As a third, I'd say Rutgers, although I'm not certain whether that's a hybrid or an O.P.

It has been several years since I planted hybrids, but two stick out in my mind: Big Beef and Improved Gurney Girl. For the later, you would probably have to order from Gurney's. I know some people from Tville have had bad experiences with Gurney's. Personally, I never had a problem with them.

Sungold, of course. I've had great luck with Juliet, because it is a tasty saladette, and a bullet-proof producer in my garden, outlasting most others in the face of blights and such.

If it were for growing reliability and output, my choice of hybrids would be;
Juliet for cherry,
Big Beef for beefsteak, and
Fourth of July for early.

As we were hit with Alternaria (along with other fungal problems) this past year, I am shifting my Heirloom-to-Hybrid ratio to about 70/30% for my 2012 Season.

Odoriko Hybrid (VFNSt) 75

Parks Whopper Hybrid (VFFNT) 65

Ramapo Hybrid (VFNT) 80

Supersonic Hybrid (VFFN) 79

V - Verticillium Wilt
F - Fusarium Wilt (FF - Races 1 & 2)
N - Nematodes
T - Tobacco Mosaic Virus
A - Alternaria Stem Canker
St - Stemphylium Gray Leaf Spot

Early: Fourth of July
Most of the hybrid beefsteaks I've grown got blight (haha, aren't they supposed to be good at dealing with diseases?!), so I'll say another cherry. Supersweet 100 or Supersweet Million, those are both very yummy!

ATKINSON is, by the traditional definition, a hybrid. I will always plant ATKINSON when available, even over "heirlooms".

I will not turn down free Lemon Boys, Celebrities, Goliaths, Early Girls or Heartlands if they are given to me, either.
