How Tomatoes Could Curb Cancer in Italy
All,
Interesting story on this link with respect to a new hybrid tomato. Called the "Realtomato" - The purple/San Marzano hybrid was the winner, testing highest antioxidant qualities. In studies, the hybrid tomato's antioxidants protected human cells from cancer. "Cancer cells were unable to grow when challenged with the extract of these tomatoes," http://gizmodo.com/5882163/how-tomat...ancer-in-italy James |

Interesting article, however it lacks detail and reeks of PR. Existing tomatoes are already high in antioxidants. The article doesnt state whether the hybid tomato is significantly higher in antioxidants than other tomatoes in the study. Moreover, it doesnt mention which other varieties (and colors) were included in the study.
Another point to consider is that many compounds can prevent the growth of cancer in a petri dish. That does not mean that the same compounds will be effective in the human body or that it is even possible to achieve the same level of atioxidants in the human body through diet. I believe that tomatoes are great for you. A purple san marzano would also be cool, but this comes off as nothing more than a marketing ploy. |
