i agree. southern new england is really rather small. you can drive thru ct, ri and mass in short order but there's a lot to see in each so you spend as much time as you want. now maine, that's a pretty large state as new england goes! vt and nh are beautiful tho politically 180 degrees different.

new york is beautiful too even tho it is not new england. stay away from down state, carolyn's region north and west is best imo.

Cape Cod is always beautiful, and not so crowded after Labor Day. If you get there drive route 6A from the Sagamore bridge to at least as far as Hyannis(less than 1 hour), it's a beautiful trip. Also cranberry country(around Plymouth, which is worthwhile also) is in the middle of harvest time in October, if you've never seen it.

if you want to get away from the crowds of leaf peppers , the potato country , arrostook county , maine is the place too go. downeast maine also, east of bar harbor. born and brought up there. moving back when i retire.
