Fedco cuts Gypsy and Diplomat Broccoli - GMO!
Fedco has decided not to sell Gypsy and Diplomat broccoli for 2012. Fedco says they're genetically engineered. That sounds a lot stronger than GMO. Does anybody know any details?

I know that GMOs are genetically engineered. What I meant to say was that some GMOs are accidentally created when a traditionally bred crop is contaminated by GMO pollen. But calling these varieties genetically engineered suggests the gene fiddling was deliberate.

I don't know about Diplomat as it's a bit newer variety.
But I've been growing Gypsy for quite a few years and it doesn't seem to be any different than any of the other Broccolis I grow. The seed isn't any more expensive either as most GMO seeds are. It would be nice to know what they are talking about. What is supposed to be "modified". It doesn't seem to be any less vulnerable to loopers than the others I grow. That's the only thing that would be needed in a good broccoli IMO. Carol |

Above are Broccoli trials from Cornell and in most cases the seed source/breeder, is indicated. I know that Fedco will not sell varieties of anything that is produced by any of the several seed companies now owned by Monsanto regardless of the fact that thy aren't even GMO's or even just normal OP's. but Gypsy is produced by Sakata in Japan and the seed source for Diplomat is not given although any of you who want to spend more time Googling can check that one out. So it might be they aren't listing either one due to limited amounts of seed. And has nothing to do with anything GMO. As I was googling I saw plenty of other places that list both varieties but didn't click on the seed sources individually to see if they had seeds in stock.

CMS
Hello,
These are CMS varieties (Cytomplasmic Male Sterile). The comes from radish and was transfered using protoplast fusion and this is considered genetically modified by organic standards. Thanks Jonny |
