Ive been reading up more on this Grubs Mystery Green which i'm finding most interesting given by the sounds of it its not a 100% stable line yet,i wished now i had grown more than one plant, but here's how my single plant is looking as of today
Looking forward to seeing what colour shows up when ripe

Grub's Mystery Green seems fairly stable to me. I always get
the same plant and fruit from my saved seeds. I have grown an RL Grub's Mystery Green, but it came from someone else's seeds. It was about two weeks later to first ripe fruit and not as tasty, in my opinion. So I would say that the mid-early PL version is stable, but there are still unstable seeds in circulation with that name from when Grub first sent some across the pond for people over here to try. (My GMG plants and fruit look just like the plant and fruit in Medbury Gardens picture above.)

What impresses me about GMG is how every flower seems to produce a tomato.

I had a mystery green two years ago that sounds similar. Mine popped up in a seed flat where peppers were planted and I decided to grow it out. It is definitely not Grubs Mystery Green. I have grown GMG several years and the plant is much smaller and the tomatoes much smaller. The fruit is also less muddy colored when ripe. The plant I grew out was one of the largest indeterminates that year with vines at about 3 times the size of the ones I get with GMG. The fruit were larger and looked more like a large beefsteak and extremely juicy with a bit milder flavor than Grubs. It also did not set fruit anywhere near as prolifically as Grubs does. I only got about 8 or 9 off a huge plant and they took far longer to make. I would class it as a 90 day tomato more like Lucky Cross.
Carolyn, maybe there is another PL green that has not been named yet or maybe it is some kind of crazy genetic freak from Grubs. It bore no similarity to Green Giant at all. I called the one I grew out Pepper Seed Green. I think I saved some seed but since it was such a late tomato I didn't grow it again. Grubs is much more suited to growing here where I have so much trouble keeping plants alive for a long time. Bill |
